SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AT THE CITY & GUILDS LONDON ART SCHOOL

City & Guilds of London Art School has an unbroken tradition of teaching sculpture, stone and woodcarving since it was founded in 1879. It plays a crucial role in keeping alive the skills essential for preserving the world’s most important monuments and buildings, and offers the UK’s only BA course in the subject.

Alongside advanced carving techniques, they provide specialist teaching in related subjects including drawing, modelling, casting, artistic anatomy, ornament study, gilding, heraldry, and the history of carving in architecture and sculpture. The Art School’s strong industry links support live projects and commissions, developing students’ professional practice, and alumni are sought after in the heritage sector.

Following my passion and building on my stonemasonry background by studying Historic Carving at the Art School simply wouldn’t have been possible for me without financial assistance. Thanks to the South Square Trust, I have been able to spend three years bettering myself, understanding historic styles, and improving my modelling, drawing and stone carving ability, with the aim to skilfully restore heritage buildings in the sympathetic way they deserve.”
